The lawsuit claims that Drake’s songs benefited from “billions of fraudulent streams” generated by fake users on Spotify, causing financial harm to legitimate artists and rightsholders.
Spotify pays artists from a revenue pool based on the total number of monthly streams, and artists inflating their streams may unfairly receive a larger share of royalties.
The lawsuit alleges that Spotify failed to prevent bots from fraudulently inflating Drake’s streams, potentially defrauding rights holders out of “hundreds of millions of dollars.”
RBX, also known as Eric Dwayne Collins, who filed the lawsuit, is a former artist who performed for labels like Death Row Records and Aftermath Entertainment, alongside artists like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.
