The Oxford University Press has named “brain rot” its 2024 Word of the Year.
It defines the term as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.”
Officials say use of the term increased 230% over the last year.
It was first coined by author Henry David Thoreau in 1854.
Last year’s Oxford Word of the Year was “rizz.”
