It was a pitcher’s dream when it came to weather Tuesday night in Manhattan, Kansas. With the Wind thunderously blowing in Nebraska, pitching had no problem throwing a gem on the road against the Kansas State Wildcats.
The Huskers picked up a dominant 6-1 victory over their former Big 12 foe thanks to the stellar performance from their bullpen. The Big Red, with this win, moves to 16-9-1 on the season.
Caleb Clark got the start for Nebraska and threw 47 pitches, allowing one run in 2.0 innings of work.
The Nebraska bullpen combined for 7.0 innings pitched, six strikeouts, four hits, and zero earned runs.
Shay Schanman was the star out of the pen for the Big Red. Schanaman pitched 3.0 shutout innings allowing just one base runner.
Despite the dominant pitching from the Huskers held just a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
With two runners on and no outs, Brice Matthews laced a ball into left field, scoring two and giving NU a 4-1 lead.
Matthew isn’t a stranger to clutch hits at-bats. In the Husker’s last Tuesday night game against North Dakota, Matthews cranked a no-doubt three-run-homer to break a 1-1 tie.
The Huskers added insurance in the ninth inning in the form of a Max Anderson home run. It was Anderson third straight game with a homer and ninth of the season.
NU added one more run in the ninth off a Josh Caron single, which scored Ben Columbus.
Schanaman closed out the contest for the Big Red, securing a 6-1 victory. Nebraska is set to travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take on the Michigan Wolverines this weekend.
