Sinners is a box office smash.
However, media coverage of Ryan Coogler’s masterpiece is causing controversy.
Despite broad appreciation and record-breaking numbers, consumers have criticized some reports for undue scrutiny not seen in other popular films.
One extensively discussed piece praised Sinners’ historic premiere and record-setting Horror CinemaScore.
The genre has never received an A.
It also made a point that the movie had yet to recover its budget, something that is rarely discussed with non-Black-directed movies.
The assessment also observed that Sinners’ opening weekend viewership was “predominantly Black” and that the picture “could benefit from broadening its reach among other demographics.”
Warner Bros., which invested significantly in Sinners, said, “Sinners is on track to be both profitable and among this year’s most critically acclaimed movies.”
One social media user asked: “I really want to know if the Times has EVER pointed out when a movie’s CinemaScore audience was mostly white and suggested it diversify its audience to find true success.”
Critics criticized the report for calling Coogler’s compensation “unusually generous given its genre and rating,” discrediting his success with Black Panther and Fruitvale Station.
