Tyler Perry’s hit dramedy Sistas, will air its midseason premiere on June 1 and according the show’s Instagram — and the many fans who agree in the comment section — “Summer starts when #SistasOnBET returns.”
The show follows four girlfriends, Andi (KJ Smith), Danni (Mignon), Karen (Ebony Obsidian) and Sabrina (Novi Brown), who navigate career, love and friendship. Making for what many say is a relatable showcasing of single Black women, Brown emphasizes the series’ ability to show each character as their true, authentic self. She also shares the message she’d pass along to young Black women.
“I get emotional because we’re not allowed to be ourselves. There’s so many other boxes they try to put us in,” Brown said in a recent interview with ABC Audio. On her advice for big dreamers Brown said, “please be unapologetic, be experimental, and be adaptable.”
The 35-year-old actress reflected on her own life and career journey from beginnings in Berlin, Germany to a hit scripted series. On if she’s always envisioned a lucrative acting career for herself she said, “You tell yourself as you’re going for your dream– ‘I’m going to do these great things.’ But then when that happens, it’s like, [wow] ‘these great things are really happening to me.'”
It’s “mixed blessings,” said Brown, but blessings nonetheless. “Now I’m realizing the responsibility I have. I’m in the same conversation as Girlfriends and the same conversations with Living Single.” Being a part of discussions around iconic shows and knowing that young girls idolize her and her co-stars, means much to a “grateful” Brown.
“I still get emotional about it every day because it’s very rare and I fought really hard to get here,” she said.
Season 4 of Sistas resumes June 1 at 9 p.m. ET on BET.
